Hery Susanto Djie was born and grew up at Blora, in Central Java (Indonesia) on April 1977.  He graduated from the junior high school in 1992 with the highest literary grades and honors in the town.  Just 15 years old, he left his hometown and family to enroll into the newly founded semi-military boarding high school, Taruna Nusantara High School, under a full scholarship after a series of rigorous selection countrywide.  He was one of few fellow countrymen to gain the acceptance by the high school, that progressively gains reputation from its strong emphasis on an exceptional academic and leadership achievements under military-like disciplines.  He was chosen to represent his school in the national physics tournament due to his excellent academic reputation in physics and mathematics, and later he became the Indonesian Physics Olympiad Team finalist.

In 1995, he pursued his interest in Electrical Engineering field motivated by his strong background in mathematics and physics and attended the newly founded Pelita Harapan University.  He was a full scholarship recipient for his entire undergraduate study in the university.  By his sophomore year, he began to involve heavily in various student organization activities and humanity programs.  He held many leaderships and advisory positions in various levels of student organization before eventually being elected as President of Pelita Harapan’s student organization.  Under his leadership, the student organization became a vibrant entity with various successful new program initiatives at national and international scopes, including the first Asian Physics Olympiad (AphO) and the first University Body-Art-and-Science Olympics.  In 1999, he earned a B.Eng degree (Cum-laude) specializing in the telecommunications.  In his graduation ceremony, he was awarded the Gold Medal for the highest academic achievement in the university among his undergraduate peers across multidisciplinary and majors.

Sparked by the advancement of optical fiber communication and optoelectronics to the leading edge of internet technology, which he involved in the national research project during his undergraduate final year, he decided to challenge himself in this relatively new field of Electrical Engineering domain.  He was then looking for an opportunity for the higher degree study abroad in the optoelectronics and photonics field.  He found a good match of his interest with the research program of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore and was awarded a full research scholarship to continue his interest in researching the semiconductor optoelectronics material, fabrication and devices under the umbrella of the School of Electronics & Electrical Engineering (EEE).  He started a new chapter of his life as a postgraduate student in the EEE’s Photonics Research Center (he won the award in the logo competition for the newly formed center and his design logo was selected by the committee) and was amused himself by finding novelties in semiconductor optoelectronics fabrication.  During three and a half years of Ph.D research under three different thesis supervisors, he managed to deliver substantial research outputs and to establish a niche field of the semiconductor nanostructure bandgap engineering using inductively coupled plasma (the full review of technical detail appeared in IEEE J. Select. Top. Quantum Electron.- special issue on Integrated Optics and Optoelectronics, vol. 11, pp. 373-382, 2005).  This novel engineering method, proposed by him and his co-workers, has been viewed as promising approach of on-chip integration by several research institutions worldwide, for instance the loss reduction solution in the integrated photonics devices by Cyoptics (was Apogee Photonics via the merger between ASIP and T-Networks).  From his Ph.D research, he has remarkably published more than 70 peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings and other scientific articles.  His work has been extremely well received by the research community in the field of monolithic photonic integration in III-V semiconductor and his new process is considered to be of significant impact for the specific field of semiconductor photonic integrations.  His research pioneership in bandgap engineering became one of key exploratory topics in S$10M Competitive Research Program (CRP) from Singapore’s National Research Foundation (NRF) led by his former Ph.D thesis supervisor, Assoc. Prof. Mei Ting.

Amidst his core Ph.D research commitments and studies, after his second year of candidature, Hery worked full-time as a research staff in the same center.  He served as one of key scientific research members to a joint research effort between Nanyang Technological University and the Defence Science Organization (DSO), Singapore on the development of wavelength tunable laser diode integrated with wavelength monitor device for the phased array antenna based True Time Delay system for LIDAR application.

After his Ph.D thesis completion in 2004, Hery worked for a short period of time in Agilent Singapore as an optoelectronics epitaxy engineer before leaving in Aug 2004 for an “adventure” in the United States.  He later pursued his postdoctoral fellowship in the similar field of optoelectronics semiconductor research with the Center for Optical Technologies at Lehigh University, Pennsylvania, United States.  In less than two and half years of his fellowship, his hard work and breakthrough in research has resulted in more than 100 top journals, US patents/disclosures, international conference proceedings, scientific articles, magazines etc.  To mention a few of his achievements, they include the first unified 3D quantum nanostructure interdiffusion process as a critical aid for nanofabrication process (featured in III-V Review magazine), the demonstration of the broadest bandwidth of semiconductor quantum-dot/dash superluminescent diodes for optical tomography and nanoscaled bioimaging, the successful fabrication of wavelength engineered quantum-dash lasers using novel techniques, and the world first ultrabroadband quantum-dash and quantum-dot lasers (featured two times in Compound Semiconductor Magazines; a US provisional patent, which he is one of the inventors, was filed to protect this technology in 2008).  The proof of concept superluminescent diode prototype developed by him and other Lehigh team members has been tested at the system-level in Carl Zeiss Meditec (USA).  Due to the importance of the invention, in Dec 2005 Carl Zeiss Meditec has agreed to license the US patent for further development of the technology.  Knowing its potential impact of the broadband laser breakthrough from his pioneering work, in July 2007 National Science Foundation (NSF) of USA has granted a substantial three-year research grant to his former group at Lehigh University to further develop the quantum dash broadband laser technology for greater impact and maturization (Grant#0725647).  A year later, the state of Pennsylvania through Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Community and Economic Development further funds the group for further advancing the broadband quantum dash laser technology to even higher level in various fields of optical fiber communications, imaging, metrology, spectroscopy and sensing (

Exposure to the research world of academia fostered Hery’s desire to gain broader exposure, breadth and diversity of experience in the semiconductor and optics industry.  Since February 2007, he has been with JDS Uniphase Corp., San Jose (CA) for the development and manufacturing of high power laser diodes, high-speed semiconductor lasers and photodiodes, monolithically integrated widely tunable semiconductor lasers, the reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM), multijunction based concentrated photovoltaics (CPV), and photonic integrated circuits.  He holds instrumental role to various new product initiatives, yield improvement programs, new process development and manufacturing throughput increase in JDS Uniphase wafer fab.  Being immersed in the semiconductor optoelectronics industry, Hery remains a highly productive science worker on his respected field of expertise afterwards.  To date, he has amassed more than 200 scientific publications under his belt from his past eight years of academic and industrial research including a book chapter, invited talks/seminars, invited papers, U.S. Patents and Industrial Invention Disclosures, in the field of photonics integrated circuits and nanoscale fabrication.  He served as a technical organizing committee of IEEE PhotonicsGlobal@Singapore Conference in 2008 and a student committee in SPIE International Symposium on Photonics and Applications in 2001.  He is acting as an editorial advisory board of The Open Crystallography Journal and an active reviewer in numerous top journals in his relevant fields including Applied Physics Letters, Journal of Applied Physics, Physical Review B, IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics, Optics

Letters, Optics Express, Applied Optics, Journal of the Optical Society of America A, Journal of Lightwave Technology, Nanotechnology, Semiconductor Science and Technology, Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, and Journal of Physics: Condensed Matters.  His biography appeared in the 61st (2007) Edition of Who’s Who in America, the 9th (2006-2007) Edition of Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, and in the 22nd (2005) Edition of Who’s Who in the World.  His research and achievement in research was featured in a special issue of Infide magazine, in the celebration of 10th Anniversary of Univ. Pelita Harapan, as the youngest doctor among alumni of Pelita Harapan University in July 2004.  In addition to series of full scholarship awards for his studies from the high school to postgraduate, he also is honored awards in association with his research paper, the conference participation, and his performance at works.  In July 2009, he was elected as a Senior Member of IEEE Silicon Valley (Santa Clara) chapter and a Senior Member of IEEE Photonics Society exactly after 10 years of professional experience in the IEEE designated field of semiconductor optoelectronics.

In October 2009, he received a Nanyang Outstanding Young Alumni Award 2009 for the young alumnus (under 35 years old) who has made the significant contributions in the respected fields that has brought honor and distinction to the University.
