Part-time degree programmes for adult learners
 

The part-time Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical & Electronic Engineering) degree is designed for those with diplomas or equivalent qualifications. This programme gives students an opportunity to further their studies on a part-time basis as they continue to work.

The degree programme leverages on active collaborative learning pedagogies to promote learning and teaching in both online and offline spaces. Enhanced by technology, classes are designed such that students can learn anytime, anywhere and effectively manage their work and study commitments.

The students take the same examinations as their full-time counterparts. Upon graduation, they will receive the same BEng degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, which is wholly recognised by reputable professional institutions such as:
  • The Institution of Engineering and Technology of the United Kingdom (IET B Eng (Hons)
    • Equivalent to MEng (UK) Eligible for Chartered Engineer Registration
  • Engineering Accreditation Board, Singapore (EAB)
    • Recognised worldwide under the Washington Accord
  • Professional Engineers Board, Singapore (PEB)
    • Eligible for Professional Engineer Registration
  • The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES)

 

The normal period of study is 4 years. Students may be allowed to complete the course in not more than 8 years.


The B. ENG (EEE) Curriculum

 Producing engineers of the future

In the new knowledge-based economy, engineering has become increasingly multi-disciplinary. To prepare our graduates for this new environment, the School has made an effort to further broaden the undergraduate curriculum.

The aim is to produce engineers who are trained in traditional disciplines and are also able to utilise their knowledge and skills to lead multi-disciplinary teams and solve increasingly complex problems. To ensure employability, our students must be able to apply existing technologies in novel ways as well as create new technologies.

With a focus on broad-based training, the EEE curriculum gives students the opportunity to study physical sciences and mathematics as well as be trained in electrical and electronic engineering. Non-engineering courses teaching communication skills will give students the edge they need to take up management roles or start up new companies in future.
 
First and Second Year Curricula
During the first and second years, courses on Engineering Mathematics are introduced to strengthen the foundation. Fundamental courses are also taught to arm students with a broad understanding of electrical and electronic engineering. These courses include:
 
  • Circuit Analysis
  • Electronics
  • Data Structure
  • Signals and Systems
  • AC Circuits and Machines

In addition, students will undertake two courses of laboratory experiments that will equip them with the practical skills required of engineers.

Courses on Basic Engineering Mathematics and Foundation Physics are provided for diploma holders to ease their transitions into the degree programme. They are also required to read the Physics II course to better prepare them for the other courses in electrical and electronic engineering. 

Third Year Curriculum
During the third year, basic principles which underpin a broad spectrum of technologies in the area of electrical and electronic engineering are taught. Core courses include
 
  • Electromagnetics
  • Integrated Electronics
  • Microprocessors

In addition, students will select two elective courses to prepare for the more in-depth specialisation during their final years at the School. 

Final Years Curriculum 
During their final years, students are given the opportunity to select their elective courses, which fall under three broad groups: Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering and Infocommunication Engineering. However, students who prefer a more in-depth study can select the courses from one of five specialisations, namely
  • Communication Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Integrated Circuit Design
  • Intelligent Systems and Control Engineering
  • Power and Clean Energy

In addition to the elective technical courses, all students are required to take a compulsory course like Human Resource Management and Engineers & Society.

Conversion From Part-Time to Full-Time Programme

After four semesters of part-time study, students may be allowed to convert their candidatures to full-time studies. Consideration for conversion is on a case-by-case basis and students who convert to full-time studies are not permitted to revert to part-time studies.
