Centre for Infocomm Technology (INFINITUS)
The INFINITUS (Latin for unlimited, infinite, without bounds, boundless, limitless) is Infocomm Centre of Excellence. It has 5 research programmes: (1) Communications and Network Systems; (2) Advanced Sensing Technologies; (3) Cyber and Network Security; (4) Data and Video Analytics; (5) Navigation and Positioning.
Centre for Micro-/Nano -electronics (NOVITAS)
The NOVITAS (Latin for newness, novelty) is a Centre of Micro-/Nano-electronics. It has strong expertise in material growth and characterization, device and IC processing, electrical and reliability measurements, modeling and simulation. The Centre’s research activities are classified into three groups: (1) Advanced Silicon Device and Integration Technologies; (2) Compound Semiconductor Devices and ICs; and (3) Nanotechnologies.
Centre for Bio Devices and Signal Analysis (VALENS)
Striving to uncover the human body’s workings and improve people’s health, VALENS has four research priorities: lab-on-chip; bio-imaging; e-Health, which includes wearable devices to monitor health; and neurotechnology, where scientists develop methods to detect and predict neurological disorders. A recent collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, for instance, resulted in a computer program to help doctors quickly diagnose epilepsy and predict seizures. VALENS also works with many Singaporean hospitals and international institutions.
Centre for OptoElectronics and Biophotonics (OPTIMUS)
The OPTIMUS (Latin for one of the best, aristocrat, noble), Centre for OptoElectronics and Biophotonics, is a research centre for advanced photonic research. The Centre’s research areas are in very-high-capacity optical communications, nanophotonics, biophotonics, microwave photonics based ultra-broadband optoelectronic information systems, micro-optical sensors for environment and intelligent homes and biomedical monitoring for personal healthcare, fiber-based photonic systems for power generation and energy delivery.
LUMINOUS! Centre of Excellence for Semiconductor Lighting and Displays
At LUMINOUS! Centre of Excellence for Semiconductor Lighting and Displays, a metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) is set up, specially dedicated to the solid-state lighting and displays. The core five research activities include (1) LED lighting and displays, including MOCVD epitaxy, device fabrication and packaging; (2) low-dimensional material systems, (3) nanocrystal LEDs (and solar cells), (4) organic LEDs (and solar cells), and (5) excitonics and plasmonics for LEDs (and photovoltaics).
VIRTUS, IC Design Centre of Excellence
The VIRTUS (Latin for excellence, valour, courage, character and worth) is an IC Design Centre of Excellence jointly funded by NTU and EDB to advance discovery and design (D&D) as well as research and development (R&D) in IC design and technology. It will develop key technologies required to design integrated circuits and systems for applications in medical technology, clean technology and consumer electronics. The centre’s research activities can be broadly divided into the following major areas, namely analog, mixed-signal, power management and data converters; energy harvesting; low-power RF and mm-wave IC’s; and new technology directions such as 3D-integration and physical design; 3D RF and mixed-signal circuits; and terahertz IC.
Centre for System Intelligence and Efficiency (EXQUISITUS)
The EXQUISITUS (Latin for Exquisite, Superb, Delicate, Sought After, Excellent, Fine) is a Centre for E-City. Its main research areas are in power electronic devices, intelligent control and optimization, and autonomy for applications in environmental monitoring, sustainability, renewable energy systems, transportation systems, aerospace engineering, maritime engineering, and defense. The centre’s research activities include energy conversion devices, clean and renewable energy systems, energy storage, smart grids, energy efficient buildings, control system technologies, mobile robotics, and intelligent transportations.
Electromagnetic Effects Research Laboratory (EMERL)
The EMERL (Electromagnetic Effects Research Laboratory) is a national-level research facility fully funded by DSO National Laboratories, Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA), and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). With its state-of-the-art facilities, EMERL spearheads research activities in Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) – areas critical to the design of increasingly compact, sensitive and high powered electronic systems, especially for today’s sophisticated systems. The areas of research include the following, but not limited to:
• Signal integrity for high-speed digital systems
• Light-weight high-performance electromagnetic shielding material
• EMI suppression for power-line communication (PLC) systems
• Secured electronic design and packaging
• Radio frequency interference (RFI) analysis
• Electromagnetic energy harvesting
Satellite Research Centre (SaRC)

The SaRC (Satellite Research Centre) is a multi-disciplinary research centre spearheading the development of innovative space technologies. It was set up after NTU has successfully developed a Merlion communication payload for the UoSat-12 mini-satellite launched in 1999. SaRC has also teamed up with the DSO National Laboratories to establish a joint centre CREST (Centre for Research in Satellite Technologies) under a MOU on 1 Dec 2001 to develop a remote sensing satellite. The areas of research and development include the following:
• Design, build, launch and operate the first made in Singapore Satellite
• Advanced attitude sensing and control system
• High performance nano- and pico-satellite
• Satellite formation flying
• Optical communication system for inter-satellite communication
• Intelligent deployment system

Centre for Optical Fibre Technology (COFT)
COFT is set-up to develop core capabilities and technologies for specialty optical fibre fabrication and characterisation. Material and device innovations for these specialty fibres range from multi-kW fibre lasers to nano-watt sensors, and from UV fibres to mid-IR fibres for applications in environmental sensing, biomedical sensing, next generation communications and many others. The centre strives to become a centre of excellence in the advanced research of optical fibres and their related technologies as well as to provide training in this field.

Silicon Technologies, Centre of Excellence (Si-COE)
Silicon Technologies, Centre of Excellence (Si-COE) is a university-level research centre jointly established by NTU and A*STAR in Feb 2012. The key objectives of the Si-COE are (i) to achieve and sustain an increased level of capabilities in Silicon Technologies and Process R&D for next generation applications; (ii). Upgrading infrastructural and facilities for its fabrication plant (Nanyang Nano-Fabrication Centre, also known as N2FC); (ii) align Silicon Technology capabilities development in Nanyang Technological University (NTU) with the needs of Singapore's semiconductor industry and complement the capabilities of Institute of Microelectronics (IME) through strategic stewardship under IME. The centre’s research activities include, but not limited to, integration of III-V on silicon, three dimensional integrated circuit, thermal management and reliability and advanced sensors.
