LUMINOUS! Centre of Excellence for Semiconductor Lighting and Displays focuses on high energy efficiency and high quality in semiconductor lighting and displays.
Efficiency in artificial lighting is vitally important because today lighting is an integral part of our society. Today lighting accounts for about 19 per cent of total electricity generation in the world. The Centre investigates and exploits the science and technology of LED lighting and advanced displays to make it possible to achieve ultra-efficiency to revolutionise lighting and displays. High efficiency is vital to sustainable growth worldwide, while offering tremendous economic and societal benefits.
LUMINOUS! brings together skilful young and experienced researchers, and equipment and facilities for semiconductor LED growth and fabrication, with the overarching goal of attracting and building a network of semiconductor companies in Singapore and worldwide.

Expert faculty ignites the imagination of researchers
LUMINOUS! is headed by Director Nanyang Professor Hilmi Volkan Demir, NRF Fellow. LUMINOUS! has currently led several major research programmes, including two NRF-CRP programmes, NRF-Fellowship, NRF-Investigatorship, A*STAR Pharos and industrial-collaboration programmes. The Professors associated with the centre are Zhang Dao Hua, Kam Chan Hin, Tay Beng Kang, Xiong Qihua and Chen Xiaodong. The Associate Professors are Fan Weijun, Pita Kantisara, Ng Geok Ing, Sun Handong and Cesare Soci. Assistant Professor is Cuong Dang.
Well-equipped facilities promote fervour
LUMINOUS! Centre of Excellence for Semiconductor Lighting and Displays houses state-of-the-art facilities for semiconductor device epitaxy, fabrication and testing including the showerhead III-N Metal-Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition (MOCVD) system. The Centre provides fully capability for the epitaxial growth of III-N as well as the synthesis of colloidal nanocrystals for solid-state lighting, displays and other optoelectronic applications. The core competencies and cutting edge technology developed at LUMINOUS! include InGaN/GaN LEDs, white LEDs, nanocrystal LEDs, organic LEDs for lighting and displays, nanocrystal quantum dot nanophosphors, and advanced displays.
