Both academic staff and all eligible students are invited to propose suitable projects. Academic staff proposes projects through Stafflink . Students propose their projects through Studentlink in two categories: Student Proposed Project and Staff/Student Joint Proposed Project.
The proposal should be within one of the following 3 special structured programmes or 6 areas and needs to be specified when submitting the proposal:
Special Programmes :
- Android Programme
- Radar Programme
- Satellite Programme
Areas :
- Power Engineering
- Circuit and System
- Information Engineering
- Control Engineering
- Communication Engineering
- Microelectronics
The procedure and guidelines of student proposal are as followed:
Firstly students should form a group of 7 to 10 students and elect a group leader. Please note that a proposal cannot be submitted if the group size is less than 7 students. Each student is only allowed to join one group.
Then they can follow either Path A for Student Proposed Project or Path B for Staff/Student Joint Proposed Project.

Path A: Student Proposed Project
>> Propose a suitable project together ;
>> The group leader logins to Studentlink to input the project title, project summary, area of project, the names and matric numbers of all the group members by the deadline Monday, 03 October 2011. The group leader is allowed to make changes including adding and dropping group members before the deadline;
>> The proposal will be evaluated after the deadline.
If accepted, the group proposing the project is guaranteed to do the project under the supervision of up to two academic staff. If the number of students in the group is less than 10, the project will be made available to other students for selection.
If rejected, the group leader will be informed. All the students in the group will select a project from the list of available projects proposed by academic staff and/or other students around 28 October 2011 and a suitable project will be allocated to each student based on his/her options. In this case, the students are not guaranteed to be in the same project group.

One sample project proposal is given below as a reference:
Project Title: Turn an electric wheel chair into robot
Brief Description of Project (Not more than 1000 characters) :
You have seen a remote controlled toy car. We are building a big one. The fun is unlimited: imaging it was controlled to do dangerous jobs such as bomb disposal. The team will be divided into 5 groups: (1) motor control circuits to replace the control stick on the chair with digital D/A converter; (2) Digital communication between the robot and computer; (3) digital video via fibre cable; (4) Graphical User Interface (GUI) design; and (5) programming of joystick. Most of the hard part of this project has been done, for example, the digital motor control circuits have done by past year students.
Area of Project: Control Engineering
