MLDA@EEE organises first ever Deep Learning Week

The year of 2019 was a series of firsts for the Machine Learning and Data Analytics lab of the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (MLDA@EEE), as it organised its first ever Deep Learning Week from 14 – 19 October 2019, which featured workshops and talks centred on Machine Learning, as well as Industry Night on 14 October 2019.

Aimed at raising the awareness of Machine Learning among NTU students while promoting MLDA@EEE as the hub for all EEE Artificial Intelligence (AI) activities, the events were well-received by students, staff and researchers. More than 300 participants attended Industry Night, which was also the launch event for the Deep Learning Week. The highlight of the event was an industry-academia panel discussion on ‘The Current Landscape of AI in Singapore’, where distinguished guests from NVIDIA, Shopee, Terra-AI, Pensees, A*STAR and NTU-EEE took turns to share invaluable insights on Singapore’s AI scene to the audience. 12 industrial booths were also set up by MLDA’s industry partners, providing students with extensive opportunities to network with professionals from companies such as Grab, Bytedance and Syn-the-sis.

For the rest of the week, the MLDA lab was abuzz with learning activities. Students were introduced to Accelerated Computing and CUDA by NVIDIA’s Principal Solutions Architect, Jeff Adie, and treated to beginner-friendly hands-on sessions, which included 1-day workshops by NVIDIA on Computer Vision and Multiple Data Types, as a well as a 2-day workshop conducted by MLDA’s Student Committee on Neural Network-based Learning Models and Classifiers.

Overall, Deep Learning Week was certainly a positive and fruitful experience for all who were involved. More Deep Learning Weeks can be expected in the near future, as MLDA@EEE looks to build on the traction gained from Deep Learning Week 2019.
