LUMINOUS! win in the College of Engineering Industry Partnership Programme cements EEE’s effort in NTU Peak of Excellence in Sustainable Earth. The joint research programme titled “High Energy‐Efficiency White Light‐Emitting Diodes for Spectrally Enhanced Lighting” in partnership with LEMNIS LIGHTING intends to overcome the photometric performance limitations that commercially available white light‐emitting diodes (WLEDs) currently face and proposes new class of smart lighting WLED systems that exhibit successful color rendition along with the highest possible mesopic luminance and the highest possible scotopic/photopic ratio.

One of the ten (10) IEEE Photonics Society (IPS) 2012 Graduate Student Fellows selected. The presentation will be made during at the 2012 IEEE Photonics Conference (IPC) which is being held September 23 – 27, 2012, at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport, Burlingame, California, USA.

Dr Aung Ko Ko Kyaw, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, College of Engineering, "Design and fabrication of excitonic solar cells". He has found an innovative way to design and fabricate a new type of organic solar cell that is set to improve the current technology. These excitonic solar cells, particularly organic solar cells and dye-sensitized solar cells, cost less than conventional silicon solar cells. Excitonic solar cells attract a lot of attention in solar cell research because they can be produced from low-temperature and solution-processed roll-to-roll manufacturing technology. This helps to reduce the cost of production and energy pay-back time tremendously. Due to his impactful research on excitonic solar cells, Dr Aung was awarded the A*STAR International Fellowship to pursue post-doctoral research at the University of California, Santa Barbara under the supervision of Nobel laureate Professor Alan Heeger. Dr Aung intends to further improve the efficiency of the cells before turning it into a commercial venture. ST_120713_B12_Solar cell researcher among 10 to win accolade.pdf

Also congratulations to Dr Aung Ko Ko Kyaw being selected for the prestigious World Future Foundation PhD Prize in Environmental and Sustainability Research in 2012. This prize is awarded to outstanding PhD research work related to or which translated into environmental and sustainability issues and solutions. The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the Otto Lehmann Foundation award a prize for important works in the field of liquid crystal technology. To combat escalating environmental concerns due to increasing carbon footprint and limited resources, innovations in high energy efficiency, especially in artificial lighting need to be made. However this comes at a rather high cost: Today lighting consumes a substantial level (about 19%) of total electricity generation globally. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has estimated that this amount of energy consumption costs us about 1900 Mt CO2 emission per year, which is equivalent to 70% of all the emission from passenger vehicles worldwide. In this research programme, we will investigate and exploit the science and technology of excitonics in design-based quantum materials in hybrid architectures at the nanoscale. We will address the scientific challenge of controlling and manipulating the localized excited state characteristics of such nanostructures and interfacing them highly efficiently through energy transfer and exciton migration processes. This is expected to make it possible to achieve ultra-efficiency to revolutionize lighting and displays. E3World2011.pdf more...
