Learn more about Electromagnetic Effects at the EMERL Laboratory

EMERL is a research laboratory jointly established by DSO National Laboratories and Nanyang Technological University (NTU). The primary objective of EMERL is to spearhead research activities in electromagnetic effects on electronic devices and systems, such as electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), which are critical to the design of increasingly compact, sensitive and high powered electronic systems, especially for today’s sophisticated systems. It also aims to be a catalyst of interdisciplinary centre of excellence in electromagnetic effects research.

Centre activities and achievements

The research activities in EMERL cover a wide range of electromagnetic effects related areas. The funded research projects include high-performance electromagnetic shielding material, secured electronic design and packaging, radio frequency interference (RFI) analysis, electromagnetic energy harvesting and electromagnetic wave propagation model. Since its establishment in 2007, EMERL has completed a total of 15 projects with a total funding close to $4M.

Facilities and Equipment EMERL is well equipped with advanced test facilities for testing related to electromagnetic effects. It comprises a semi-anechoic chamber (SAC) for radiated electromagnetic emission test and a mode stirred chamber (MSC) for radiated electromagnetic immunity test. The SAC has a size of 21 m (L) × 13m (W) × 9 m (H) and is well shielded with magnetic field shielding of 56 dB at 10 kHz to 90 dB at 100 kHz and electric field shielding of at least 100 dB from 10 kHz o 40 GHz. Inside the chamber, a 4 m diameter turntable capable of taking up to 20 tonnes dynamic load is being installed to support large test objects such as commercial and military vehicles. The MSC is 8.5 m (L) × 12.5 m (W) × 6 m (H) in size with two stirrers, one vertical and one horizontal. It is capable of generating up to 1000 V/m for the most stringent electromagnetic immunity test.
